What kind of Centre?

A new Community Centre should have a room large enough for community meetings and social events, including wedding receptions. It might also have a dedicated youth club with its own entrance.

The Community Association would like the new building to be largely self supporting. How will all this be paid for? The largest proportion of the funds will come from the sale of the existing centre. In addition, the City Council has already promised some funding. Berkeley Homes, who are developing the Lucy's site have allocated £100,000. There should be also be at least this amount from from the developer of the canalside site. Since we already have pledges for most of the funds, we are in a strong position to make grant applications for the rest.

In 2001 the Community Association also carried out an extensive survey of what local people wanted. More than 150 households responded.Of these around half use the current Centre. They said that the facilities they would be most likely to use at the new Centre would be a café, a functions hall, a space for music and small concerts and rooms for adult education. People also wanted more activities for children and young people.
