News in brief

Jericho Street Fair Paul Hornby shows his culinary skills at the Jericho Street Fair

Our annual street fair in June was another great success. Thousands of visitors from all over Oxford and beyond enjoyed lots of good food and an amazing variety of stalls as well as terrific music at both the Bookbinders stage and the Canal Street gazebo. Our thanks to all the local businesses who provided prizes and to the City Council for subsidizing the stall hire.

Walton Street Cycles

Due to the illness of the current owner of Walton Street Cycles, which consists of both the shop and the repair workshop in Cranham Terrace, the business is up for sale. Fortunately it will probably be bought by five local businessmen who are themselves keen cyclists, so there seems every chance that the business will continue as before.

Jericho Playgroup

We hope to open the playgroup again in January at the Jericho Community Centre. We are planning 2-hour sessions at least twice a week to begin with. If you are interested please call 557902.

Bag that mess

Dog fouling is a serious problem in some parts of Jericho. Owners can be fined if they don’t clean up after their dogs. Note that securely wrapped dog-mess can be put into public refuse bins or your dustbin at home.

Painting with words

Poetry reading at Art Jericho

Local poets read their work on October 17 in Art Jericho in King Street. The gallery has a full programme ahead, starting on November 21 with the Oxford Art Society Winter exhibition. ‘Art Fun for Christmas’ on December 12 from 10.30 a.m. will be an artist-led children’s workshop, making cards and decorations. Details from artjericho.com. Another venue for Jericho artists is the University of Oxford shop in High Street which has pictures by David Langford and Valerie Petts.

Food waste collection

Jericho is to be one of the pilot areas for collection of food waste. You can have a green ‘caddy’ to be collected weekly. The trial will start on December 7.

Thanks Mattie and Maureen

Mattie Marren and Maureen Wheelan, landlords of the Bookbinders, are now moving on. Good luck, and thanks for all your support, particularly on the street fair.
